“The body is the subconscious”, Eugene T. Gendlin
Our body constitutes an intelligent creation. Each symptom it develops is not random at all, since it is through those same symptoms that the body endeavors to forge a communication bridge with the conscious mind and bring to light some repulsed aspects of the Self.
Headache is not simply one more problem in our daily life, to which the solution is nothing more than a painkiller. On the contrary, it comprises an opening gate to our psyche, a terrific opportunity for deep introspection. It might be an emotion we suppressed, an unresolved internal conflict, sadness not truly lived, a life choice not actually self-expressing, a damaging, unhealthy diet, or even all the accumulated daily stress that has left no space to joy.
As long as we refuse to give the symptom the space it requires and recur, instead, to the cheap solution of its oppression and suppression through chemical means, or we just ignore its existence, it will keep making its appearance again and again, in the same form, or even evolve to a more severe condition over time. Moreover, let us not forget that the symptom is all the best the body could do in order to ensure the survival of the organism as a whole; a sacrifice of some degree in order to preserve the whole existence.
Every step we make to the direction of decodifying the hidden message carried by our body’s wisdom, meditating on the symptoms and considering them as a precious ally and not an enemy any more, is a gigantic victory. On the one hand such process can act in a self-healing way, making the symptom itself disappear, and on the other, it can reveal pieces of our deepest emotions and true wishes. Actually, what is there that could be more self-healing than the realization of agonizing feelings, which transform as they come to the light of consciousness to show us the way toward living life to the fullest.
